On a Mac? Green Room checks all three from your menu bar and warns you when something changes.

One click next to the clock shows your camera, mic, and speakers. Before you record, it checks the camera's resolution and frame rate, and flags a dark room or a backlit face. Free, with no account.

How to read your result

  • Resolution is the size of the picture your camera is sending right now. 1920×1080 (1080p) looks sharp on a call. 1280×720 (720p) is fine. Anything smaller looks soft.
  • Frame rate is how many pictures a second arrive. 30 fps looks smooth. Many webcams drop to 15 fps or less in a dim room, because each frame needs more light.
  • Brightness is how light the picture is overall. Under about 20% you'll look dim and grainy. The check also compares your face with the background, so it can tell when a window behind you is doing the lighting.

The easiest upgrade for any webcam is light: a lamp or a window in front of you, a little above eye level.

Camera test not working?

If the preview stays black or the test won't start, it's usually one of three things:

  1. The site isn't allowed to use the camera.Click the icon at the left of the address bar (Chrome) or open Safari › Settings › Websites › Camera, and set this site to Allow.
  2. Your browser isn't allowed to use the camera. On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera and turn on your browser. You may need to quit and reopen it.
  3. Another app has the camera.Quit Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, or anything else that might be using it, then click Restart.

Questions

Is this webcam test private?

Yes. The preview and the checks run in your browser. No video is uploaded, saved, or sent anywhere.

Why is my resolution lower than my webcam's box says?

This test asks for 1080p, and the camera sends the closest size it can right now. A camera can send less because of what it supports, a busy USB hub, or another app holding it. When the browser reports it, the page also shows the most the camera can do.

Do other people see me mirrored?

The preview is mirrored by default so it feels like a mirror. Video apps usually send the unmirrored picture, so others see you the way a camera does. Turn off Mirror the preview to see that view.

Does the webcam test work on Windows and phones?

Yes. It works in any current browser that can use a camera. The fixes in our guides are written for Macs.
