Free mic test · Nothing leaves your browser
Test your microphone. Hear yourself back.
Pick your mic, say a few words, and watch the meter. Then record five seconds and play it back, so you know how you sound, not just that it works.
Hear yourself
Record 5 seconds and it plays right back. The clip stays in this tab and is gone when you leave.
Runs entirely in your browser. No audio is uploaded, saved, or sent anywhere.
On a Mac? Green Room checks all three from your menu bar and warns you when something changes.
This page works while the tab is open. Green Room sits next to the clock with a camera preview, a mic meter, and a speaker test, and tells you when your mic goes silent or AirPods take over. Free, with no account.
How to read your result
- Your mic works: sound is coming in at a level people can hear without turning you up.
- A little quiet or Very quiet: the mic hears you, but faintly. Move closer, speak toward the front of the mic, or raise its gain knob or the input volume.
- No sound is coming in: the mic is connected but sends silence. That's almost always a mute button, a gain knob turned all the way down, or an input volume at zero.
- Too loud: your voice hits the top of the meter and will crackle. Turn the gain down a notch.
The meter shows the raw signal. The browser's echo cancellation, noise suppression, and automatic volume are off here, so you hear the mic itself.
Mic test not working?
If the list is empty or the test won't start, it's usually one of three things:
- The site isn't allowed to use the mic.Click the icon at the left of the address bar (Chrome) or open Safari › Settings › Websites › Microphone, and set this site to Allow.
- Your browser isn't allowed to use the mic.On a Mac, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and turn on your browser. You may need to quit and reopen it.
- The mic isn't connected. If no mic appears, unplug it and plug it back in, try another port, or skip the hub.

Questions
Is this mic test private?
Yes. The meter and the recording run in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, saved, or sent anywhere, and the recording is gone when you close the tab.
Why doesn't my microphone show up in the list?
Browsers only show mic names after you allow access, so click Start first. If it's still missing, your computer doesn't see it: unplug it, plug it back in, and try another port or skip the hub.
Why do I sound different in Zoom or Google Meet?
Call apps clean up your voice with noise suppression and automatic volume. This test turns those off in the browser, so you hear what the mic itself picks up.
Does the mic test work on Windows and phones?
Yes. It works in any current browser that can use a microphone. The fixes in our guides are written for Macs.
