Free speaker test · Works in any browser

Test your speakers. Hear every side.

Play a sound on the left, the right, or both, then sweep from deep bass to a high whistle. Start with your volume low.

Volume

Click Left, Both, or Right. You'll hear three rising notes.

Low-to-high sweep

Eight seconds from a 40 Hz rumble to a 16 kHz whistle. Listen for rattles, buzzing, or spots where the sound drops out.

40 Hz1 kHz16 kHz

The sounds are made in your browser. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

On a Mac? Green Room checks all three from your menu bar and warns you when something changes.

Its speaker test plays in your left ear, then your right, one click from the clock. When AirPods or a nearby iPhone grab your sound, it tells you and switches back. Free, with no account.

What to listen for

  • Left plays on the right: headphones are on backwards (check the L and R marks), or speaker cables are crossed.
  • One side is quiet or silent: check the Balance slider in System Settings › Sound › Output, then the cable or the headphone's own connection.
  • Both isn't centered: if it pulls to one side, the balance is off or one speaker is turned down.
  • Rattle or buzz in the sweep: something is loose, or the speaker is too loud for its size. Turn it down and play the sweep again.

Small speakers and laptops can't play the lowest notes, so silence at the very start of the sweep is normal.

No sound at all?

  1. Check where the sound is going. On a Mac, open System Settings › Sound › Output and pick your speakers or headphones. AirPods and other Bluetooth headsets can take over the output when they connect.
  2. Check the volume and mute.Turn up your Mac's volume and any knob on the speakers. Make sure this browser tab isn't muted.
  3. Reconnect the device.Unplug it and plug it back in, try another port, or reconnect it in Bluetooth settings.

Questions

Why can't I hear the start of the sweep?

The sweep starts at 40 Hz, a deep rumble that small speakers, laptops, and many earbuds can't play. Hearing it come in partway through is normal. A rattle or buzz is not.

Why can't I pick an output in Safari?

Safari doesn't let web pages choose a speaker, so the test plays on your Mac's current output. Change it in System Settings › Sound › Output, or the Sound menu in Control Center. Chrome and Firefox can pick one here.

Left and right are swapped. What's wrong?

With headphones, they're usually on backwards: check the L and R marks. With speakers, the cables are likely crossed at the speakers or the interface.

Does the speaker test work on Windows and phones?

Yes. It works in any current browser that can play sound. The output picker only appears where the browser allows it.
