AirPods mic not working? Here's the fix.
Usually your Mac or the call app is listening to a different mic. And if calls sound muffled both ways, that's call mode, not a broken mic.
Quick check first: open the free mic test, click Start, pick your AirPods from the list, and talk. If the meter moves, the mic works and the problem is in one app (step 2). If it doesn't, start at step 1.
Fix an AirPods mic, step by step
- Choose the AirPods as your input.Open Apple menu › System Settings › Sound, click Input, and select your AirPods. Speak and watch the input level move.
- Pick them in the app.Zoom, Teams, and other call apps can keep their own mic choice. In Zoom, open Settings › Audio and choose your AirPods under Microphone. In FaceTime, use the Video menu.
- Give the app permission.Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and turn on the app you're using. Quit and reopen the app after you change it.
- Check which AirPod is the mic.In System Settings, click your AirPods' name in the sidebar and find Microphone (if you don't see it, click Audio & Routing first). If it says Always Left AirPod or Always Right AirPod, choose Automatically Switch AirPods.
- Clean the mic mesh.Dirt over the small mesh openings muffles your voice. Follow Apple's cleaning steps for your model, which use a soft brush; never push anything into the openings.
- Reconnect them.Put both AirPods in the case for 15 seconds, then take them out and connect again. If they won't connect at all, see AirPods not connecting to Mac.
Why calls sound muffled: Bluetooth call mode
AirPods sound great for music, but the moment an app turns on their mic, they switch to a two-way call mode. Your voice and everything you hear both drop to phone quality. That's why a call can sound thin and muffled even though the AirPods work fine.
The better setup on a Mac: use your Mac's own mic and keep the AirPods for listening. In System Settings › Sound › Input, choose your MacBook's microphone (or a USB mic), and pick the same mic in your call app. The AirPods stay in full quality for what you hear, and your voice often sounds clearer too. Sit close to your Mac, since its mic hears more of the room.

What Green Room does automatically
Green Room is a free menu bar app that shows which mic your calls are really using.
- Spots call mode. When an app turns on your AirPods mic, it tells you, and one click switches the mic to your Mac's own.
- Shows the mic each app is using. If Zoom uses a different mic than the one you picked, it says so and offers the fix.
- Lets you hear yourself. Record five seconds and play them back before the call. Nothing is saved.
On a Mac? Green Room catches call mode before anyone hears it.
It tells you when a call app turns on your AirPods mic, and switches to your Mac's mic in one click. Free, with no account.
