Is your sound working? Press play.
If you hear a steady tone, your sound works. If you hear nothing, the fixes are right below the test.

Is it coming from both sides?

Can't hear the tone?
Work down this list. Most "no sound" problems are one of the first three.
- Check the volume and mute.Press the volume up key, and look for a mute icon in the menu bar. Turn up any knob on your speakers, and make sure they're switched on.
- Check where the sound is going. On a Mac, open Control Center, click Sound, and pick the speakers or headphones you want. Sound may be going to headphones, a monitor, or AirPods in a case across the room.
- Check this browser tab.In Safari, click the Audio button in the address field to unmute the page. In Chrome, right-click the tab and look for Unmute site.
- Unplug and reconnect.Unplug headphones and USB audio devices, then plug back in what you want to use. For Bluetooth, turn it off and on, or reconnect the device in Bluetooth settings.
- Restart. If nothing plays anywhere, restart your computer. It clears a stuck audio system more often than you'd think.
On a MacBook with no sound from the built-in speakers, read MacBook speakers not working for the full list.
Hear it here, but not somewhere else?
Then your sound works, and the problem is in one app or page. Check that app's own volume slider and mute button. Video sites like YouTube have their own volume control, and call apps like Zoom keep their own speaker choice in their audio settings.

Questions
I hear the tone here but not in my video or game. Why?
Then your sound works and the problem is in that one app or page. Check its own volume and mute controls, and in Safari make sure the tab isn't muted. Some apps also keep their own output choice in their settings.
Is the test tone loud?
It starts at half volume on the slider, which is gentle on most speakers. If you're wearing headphones, turn your volume down first, then bring it up until the tone is comfortable.
Does the sound test record anything?
No. The sounds are made in your browser and nothing is recorded. In Chrome, the optional Show device names button asks for the microphone only so the browser will share output names.
Does the sound test work on phones and Windows?
Yes. It works in any current browser that can play sound. On a phone, make sure the ringer switch or silent mode isn't muting the page.
