Camera, mic, speakers. Ready before you go on.

Green Room lives in your menu bar and checks all three in one click: a live camera preview, a mic meter, and a speaker test. Save your usual setup, and it warns you when AirPods grab the sound or your USB mic isn't plugged in.

Two minutes before the call

One click, three answers.

Which camera, which mic, and which speakers your Mac will use, and whether each one works. No more “can you hear me?” for the first minute.

  1. 1

    Click the camera icon

It sits next to the clock. The first time, macOS asks for camera and mic access. Green Room only uses them while the panel is open.

  2. 2

    Check all three

See yourself in the preview. Talk and watch the meter move. Click Test to hear a tone in your left ear, then your right.

  3. 3

    Save it as your setup

Picking a mic or speaker makes it your Mac's default, the same as System Settings. Then click Save as my setup, and Green Room remembers it.

Your setup, remembered

It notices the switch before your guests do.

AirPods connect and quietly take over the sound. A dock comes loose and your Mac falls back to its built-in mic. You find out when someone says you sound far away.

Green Room compares what's in use with the setup you saved. When they don't match, the menu bar icon turns into a warning, the panel says exactly what changed, and an alert tells you right away. Unplug a whole dock and you get one alert, not five.

  • No setup saved yet
  • Ready: matches your setup
  • Something changed

When a device goes missing

Not just missing. Missing because.

Green Room keeps a history of every camera, mic, and speaker you use. When one that's usually here disappears, it tells you why, and what to try first.

USB

Not plugged in

Your Mac doesn't see it on USB at all.

Try the cable, the hub, or another port.

USB

Plugged in, but not working

It's on USB, but not showing up as a camera or mic.

Try unplugging it and plugging it back in.

Bluetooth

Not connected

It's off, or not paired right now.

Try turning it on, or connect it in Bluetooth settings.

Works from day one. Green Room also reads macOS's own memory of USB audio devices, so a mic you've used before shows up before Green Room has any history of its own.

Connected isn't the same as working

Catch the silent mic.

A mic can be plugged in, picked, and still send nothing. Under the meter, Green Room tells you when macOS has it muted, when its input volume is at zero, or when no sound has come in for five seconds.

That last one is usually the mute button or gain knob on the mic itself, the one you bumped while packing up yesterday.

For AI agents

Let your AI agent install it.

Using Claude Code, Codex, or another coding agent? Paste this in and it will install and open Green Room for you.

Install the macOS app "Green Room" for me.
If Homebrew is installed (check with `command -v brew`), run:
  brew install --cask coreyhaines31/tap/greenroom
Otherwise, download and install the signed DMG:
  curl -fL -o /tmp/GreenRoom.dmg https://github.com/coreyhaines31/greenroom/releases/latest/download/GreenRoom.dmg
hdiutil attach -nobrowse -quiet -mountpoint /tmp/greenroom-dmg /tmp/GreenRoom.dmg
  ditto "/tmp/greenroom-dmg/Green Room.app" "/Applications/Green Room.app"
  hdiutil detach -quiet /tmp/greenroom-dmg
Then open it with: open -a "Green Room"
It's a menu bar app with no Dock icon. Tell me to look for the small camera
icon near the clock, and that macOS will ask for camera and microphone access
the first time I open the panel (only used while the panel is open).
Finally, run `greenroom status` (Homebrew puts it on the PATH; otherwise it's
"/Applications/Green Room.app/Contents/MacOS/greenroom") and tell me what it says.

Then let it check your setup for you

The greenroom command reads your devices from Terminal, so you, a script, or an agent can check them without clicking anything.

  • greenroom statusThe camera, mic, and speaker in use, and whether they match your setup. Exits with 2 when something's wrong.
  • greenroom devicesEverything connected, plus usual devices that are missing and why.
  • greenroom historyRecent plug-ins, unplugs, and switches.

Add --json to any of them. To make it automatic, add this line to your CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md:

Before I record or join a call, or when I say my mic or camera isn't working, run `greenroom status --json` and tell me anything that doesn't match my setup, and why.

Homebrew links the command for you. Installed from the DMG? Link it once:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
sudo ln -sf "/Applications/Green Room.app/Contents/MacOS/greenroom" \
  /usr/local/bin/greenroom

What happens in the green room stays there.

No analytics, no account, no cloud

Green Room never talks to the internet except to check for updates. There's nothing to sign up for.

Live only while you look

They run while the panel is open, and stop when it closes. Nothing is recorded or saved.

History stays on your Mac

Your device history lives in one folder on your Mac, and never leaves it.

Questions

Does Green Room record me?

No. The camera and mic only run while the panel is open, so you can see and hear that they work. Nothing is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere.

Will it change my camera in Zoom or Google Meet?

Picking a mic or speaker in Green Room makes it your Mac's default, the same as System Settings › Sound, so most apps follow it. Picking a camera sets the one macOS suggests to apps. Zoom and Meet keep their own camera setting, so pick it there once too.

How does it know a device is usually here?

Green Room keeps a history of every camera, mic, and speaker it sees. A device that's been connected on most recent days counts as usual. For USB audio devices it also reads macOS's own memory, so a mic you've used before shows up from the first day.

My mic is plugged in. Why does it say Not plugged in?

It means your Mac doesn't see the mic on USB at all, even though the plug is in. That points to the cable, a hub, or the port. Try another port, or plug it straight into your Mac.

What happens when I unplug my dock?

You get one alert that lists every usual device that left with it, not a pile of alerts. Turn alerts off any time in the gear menu.

Does it work with AirPods and other Bluetooth devices?

Yes. When a usual Bluetooth device is missing, Green Room says Not connected, and tells you to turn it on or connect it in Bluetooth settings.

What do I need to run it?

macOS 14 Sonoma or later. The app is signed and notarized by Apple, and it updates itself.

Is it really free?

Yes. The source is on GitHub under the Functional Source License (FSL-1.1-MIT), and each version becomes MIT two years after it's released.
